The Elementary Art class had a great time learning how to draw birds.
We started by practicing drawing birds in our sketch books:
  • Draw a large half circle about the size of your fist in the middle of your paper for your bird’s body.
  • Draw a smaller half-circle on top of that for your bird’s head.
  • Add a triangle for the beak and a small circle, or a dot, for the eye.
  • Draw two straight lines down from the bird’s body for its legs, with an upside-down “V” at the bottom for feet.
  • For the wings and tail, make something like a heart shape, only with three bumps instead of two.
After practicing a bit, we drew our birds on watercolor paper with vine charcoal.

We then Outlined it with oil pastel. Add some oil pastel details to the background in a lighter color.
We talked about cool and warm colors and how warm colors come toward you. We made them colorful and fun because birds are bright and fun.

Paint the backgrounds with a cool, complimentary color to make the birds pop. Cool colors will make your warm-colored birds come forward, and complimentary colors make them pop more.
